About Red Cross Opticals
The Karnataka Red Cross started its first Optical Unit in 1987 at Minto Hospital, Bangalore, with the objective of helping poor and needy people by providing affordable eye care services. Since then, the unit has been serving thousands of patients every year, ensuring that quality vision care is accessible to all sections of society. Established under the Indian Red Cross Society, Karnataka State Branch with a strong humanitarian spirit, Red Cross Optical continues its mission to reduce preventable blindness and improve eye health by offering affordable spectacles, and optical support, especially for the underprivileged.

Types of Spectacles Available at Red Cross Optical
- Single Vision Lenses: – For near vision (reading) or distance vision.
- Bifocal Lenses: – For both near and distance correction in one lens.
- Progressive Lenses: – Advanced lenses without visible lines, for smooth transition between near, intermediate, and distance vision.
- Reading Glasses: – Affordable ready-made and custom-made options.
- Computer Glasses / Anti-Glare Lenses: – To reduce eye strain from screens.
- Photo chromatic (Transition) Lenses: – Lenses that adjust to sunlight, turning dark outdoors and clear indoors.
- Sunglasses with Power: – UV-protected lenses with prescription strength.
- Children’s Spectacles: – Durable and lightweight frames with shatter-resistant lenses.
- Low Vision Aids – Specialized lenses and magnifiers for patients with partial vision.
Year-wise Achievements of Red Cross Optical
1987
Established the first Optical Unit at Minto Hospital, Bangalore, to provide affordable spectacles to poor and needy patients.
1995
Expanded services with low-cost eye testing facilities for the general public.
2002
Introduced bifocal and progressive lenses at subsidized rates.
2010
Crossed 50,000 beneficiaries, providing spectacles and eye care support.
2015
Launched special outreach programs in rural Karnataka for eye screening camps.
2018
Introduced computer glasses and anti-glare lenses for students and working professionals.
2022
Crossed the milestone of approximately 1,00,000 patients served through the Optical Unit.
