History of Karnataka Red Cross Blood Bank

The Karnataka Red Cross Blood Bank was started in the year 1991. Till 2011 March, the task of the Blood Bank was limited to collection of whole blood and distribution to the needy patients. Since 1st April 2011, Karnataka Red Cross Blood Bank has been granted license to segregate blood components.The collection of blood units has increased from few thousands in the formative years to more than 25,000 units during 2013-14. The Karnataka Red Cross Blood bank is a designated Major blood Bank.

From 1st of April 2011 to March 2014, Karnataka Red Cross blood bank has supplied blood units to the 12 Districts – Chitradurga, Davangere, Bellary, Bagalkote, Bijapur, Bidar, Raichur, Koppal, Yadgir, Gulbarga, Kolar & Chamarajanagar under National Rural Health Mission.

The Karnataka Red Cross Blood Bank has also entered into Memorandum of understanding with many private and rural hospitals to act as Mother blood bank to their Blood Storage Centers. The Karnataka Red Cross Blood Bank is also encouraging the district branches of Indian Red Cross Society to have their own blood storage centres and blood bank. The Karnataka Red Cross Blood Bank is also well equipped to impart training to the Medical officers and technicians, who have to man the blood storage centres and blood banks. Karnataka Red Cross Blood Bank aims to develop a sustainable, standard and safe blood service to the people of the state through a network of blood storage centers and blood banks.

About our blood bank

For last four years there is 100% voluntary blood collection.

2010-11 –  >10,000 units collected

2011-12 –  >15,000 units collected

2012-13 –  >20,000 units collected

2013-14 –  >25,000 units collected

2014-15 –  >29,611 units collected

2015-16 –  >33,544 units collected

2016-17 –  >18,296 units collected (As on 31st October 2016)



Indian Red Cross Society, Chikkaballapur district branch,Chikkaballapur has started its own Blood Bank with blood components to cater to the needs of Chikkaballapur District.


About Mobile Blood Bus

Customized blood mobile bus has been donated by National AIDS Control organization through  Government of Karnataka. Only Few Such Mobile Blood Buses are operative in the Country.
